After an opening season victory over Principia last Friday, the girls varsity volleyball team headed to Visitation Academy for a highly competitive tournament on Saturday.
The Wildcats opened pool play by splitting with Francis Howell North, falling 25-27 before bouncing back with a 25-17 victory. Westminster then picked up back-to-back sweeps, defeating St. Vincent 25-11, 25-11 and Francis Howell Central 25-23, 25-13.
In bracket play, the Wildcats faced Rockwood Summit in the quarterfinal round and battled to a 2-1 victory. After dropping the opening set 20-25, Westminster responded with wins of 25-13 and 25-21 to advance.
The Wildcats then met Parkway Central in the championship match. Westminster battled throughout, but Parkway Central earned the tournament title with a 2-0 victory, 25-18 and 25-23.
Senior Emory Freesmeier was named the Tournament MVP after an outstanding weekend. Freesmeier recorded 26 kills on 54 attempts and 12 blocks throughout the tournament, including a dominant performance against Rockwood Summit with 13 kills and 6 blocks.
The second place finish provides a strong start for the team as the season gets rolling.
