Wildcat Soccer Faces Stiff Competition in the Inaugural Year of the Champions League

This week marked the end of pool play in the first season of the St. Louis Champions League, a new soccer competition featuring sixteen of the metro area's top programs. The Wildcats faced tough opponents in a pool that included CBC, Lindbergh, and Ft. Zumwalt East.

The team kicked off their campaign on September 14 against the Lindbergh Flyers, who finished third in last season's Class 4 State Championship. The Wildcats held strong against the formidable Flyers, with junior goalkeeper Jacob Stinebaker allowing only one goal. Junior Charlie Kruse scored the equalizing goal, and the match concluded with a 1-1 tie.

The second match pitted the Wildcats against CBC Cadets. Stinebaker delivered another solid performance, keeping the Cadets to a single goal. However, the Wildcats couldn't breach the plane of the goal, and suffered a narrow 1-0 loss.

In their final pool game, the Wildcats hosted Ft. Zumwalt East Lions. The match was a defensive battle with no goals in the first half. The game seemed destined for a draw until junior Krew Collison  was fouled in the box and earned a penalty kick. With just over three minutes remaining, Collisons's precise kick secured a 1-0 victory for Westminster.

Although the Wildcats won't advance to the bracket play, the Champions League provided invaluable experience as they head into the postseason. The team looks forward to applying the lessons learned from these high-stakes matches in their upcoming games.
