The girls lacrosse team earned a first round bye in the postseason state tournament by virtue of their 12th place end of season ranking. This also guaranteed them a home game in round two as they hosted Parkway South on Thursday. Although the weather forecast looked ominous, the rain held off just long enough to get the game completed. It was a back and forth affair in the first half with the Wildcats leading 3-2 after the first quarter and 5-3 at the half. The Cats were able to stretch their lead after the half with a dominant third quarter to take a 10-5 lead into the final frame. Both teams scored once in the fourth for a final score of 11-6. Senior
Kennedy McGowan led all Wildcat goal scorers with three goals while fellow seniors
Molly Kate Bugh,
Grace Mitchell, and
Corinne Plumb scored two each.
Ellie Berkland made 12 saves on the evening.
The team was then slated to travel to Cor Jesu for a sweet sixteen match up with the Chargers on Saturday. However, rain late on Friday afternoon made the grass field at Cor Jesu unplayable and so the Cats were able to play one more game at home. This game was also a back and forth affair with Cor Jesu leading 6-4 at the half. The third quarter was again the decisive segment but this time not in favor of the home team. Cor Jesu pushed the lead to 12-8 and then milked the clock in the final minutes of the fourth quarter to win 14-10.
It was fun to watch the team compete until the end and we are proud of them and their effort.
