Girls Lacrosse Season Ends in Sweet Sixteen

The girls lacrosse team ended their season in a tightly contested playoff game against St. Dominic on Tuesday evening at Westminster.

The team took early control of the game scoring four girls in a little over three minutes in the first quarter. St. Dominic bounced back scoring a goal of their own to make the score at the end of the first quarter 4-1.

The second half was a defensive battle with the Crusaders scoring the lone goal of the period to send the teams to half time with the Cats up two.

Dominic was able to even the score at four apiece midway through the third quarter before a Wildcat goal regained the lead at 5-4. A goal for the visitors in the final seconds of the quarter evened the score one more time setting the stage for a dramatic finish.

Westminster scored a go ahead goal in the first two minutes of the fourth quarter and then added a second goal halfway through to take a 7-5 lead. With the Cats trying to kill the clock by maintaining possession, St. Dominic scored a goal with 2:39 left on the clock and then the equalizer with only :13 remaining. Despite the short time, Westminster had one last gasp in regulation with a shot following a penalty that went just wide of the net with only two seconds remaining.

Girls lacrosse overtime is a 3:00 minute period with the first goal scored ending the game. The teams battled for half of the period before St. Dominic was able to convert a turnover on their offensive end into a breakaway goal.

Lane Highmark scored three goals while Lauren McCall and Mia Fuller both scored two. Ava Breckenkamp played admirably in goal in the absence of the Wildcats starting goalie while Edde Sue Doehring took on the challenge of limiting St. Dominic's leading scorer.

The Wildcats graduate a number of starters in their senior class but bring back a strong nucleus of talented underclassmen to build on the success of the season which included a top 8 seed in the playoffs.
