The Westminster girls soccer team captured the Class 2 District 2 Championship in impressive fashion last week as the Wildcats defended their home field and earned their first district title since 2019.
Westminster entered the tournament as the No. 1 seed after a strong regular season and received a first-round bye before opening postseason play against the No. 4 seed Maplewood-Richmond Heights Blue Devils in the semifinal round.
The Wildcats wasted little time asserting control, ending the match in a single half with a dominant 9-0 victory. Senior Alyssa Edwards led the offensive explosion with a hat trick, while junior Anna Ramsey added two goals and three assists. Sophomore Charlie Sgarlata also had a huge night with two goals and two assists. Sophomore Ava Bertel and freshman Aziele Horn each found the back of the net as well, while junior goalkeeper Jaymison Lenk helped preserve the shutout.
The district championship match brought a much tougher challenge as Westminster faced the No. 2 seed Visitation Vivettes in a defensive battle. The game's lone goal came early in the first half when Sgarlata connected with Ramsey for the eventual game-winner. Lenk and the Wildcat defense held strong throughout the match, securing a 1-0 victory and the district championship trophy.
The win captured the 100th District Championship in Westminster history.
With the win, Westminster advances to the Class 2 State Quarterfinals and will host St. Vincent on Saturday, May 30 at 12pm, as the Wildcats continue their postseason run.
