The Westminster Wildcats softball team claimed the Class 4 District 2 Championship with an unforgettable week of postseason play, capped by an 11–9 victory over the top-seeded Cor Jesu Chargers in the title game. The win avenged two regular-season losses to the Chargers and secured the Wildcats' spot in the state quarterfinals.
The road to the championship began with a dominant 15–0 quarterfinal win over Mehlville at home on October 15. The Wildcats carried that momentum into the semifinals, where they edged Rockwood Summit 4–3 thanks to a walk-off RBI single from senior Addi Drumm, sending the Wildcats to the championship game.
In the final against Cor Jesu, the Wildcats showed resilience and heart. Sophomore Charlie Berkmeyer started in the circle, and junior Jaymison Lenk came on to close. The game was tied 5–5 through three innings, but Cor Jesu surged ahead with a grand slam to take a 9–5 lead.
Refusing to back down, Westminster answered in the fifth inning. With two outs and two runners on, sophomore Lainey Kane delivered a clutch single to tie the game 9–9. Then, in the top of the sixth, junior Sophia Bell drew a walk, setting the stage for junior Abby Milgie, who blasted a two-run home run on a full count to give the Wildcats an 11–9 lead.
The defense held strong in the final innings, and Lenk sealed the championship by striking out the final batter — setting off a Wildcat dogpile near home plate.
Next up, Westminster will travel to Imperial on Saturday, October 25, to face the Windsor Lady Owls in the Class 4 Quarterfinal, with a trip to the Final Four in Springfield on the line.
