For the first time in school history, the Field Hockey team has advanced to the Elite Eight in the playoffs. A 12-5 regular season record earned a #9 seed for the playoffs. After a first round victory over Whitfield on Tuesday, the Cats moved on to play the #8 seed, Ladue, on Saturday afternoon at John Burroughs. The weather was perfect and the stage set for a great playoff matchup.
The first half was everything expected as the teams went to half time tied 2-2. Westminster netted two goals in the first quarter while Ladue split their two goals into each quarter. The third quarter was the difference as the Cats offense pushed two goals into the net while the defense kept the Rams off of the scoreboard. The girls then opened up a three goal lead early in the fourth quarter before Ladue was able to answer about halfway through to close the gap to 5-3. That's how the score would end as the defense stiffened and Audrie Bockman made some great saves in goal.
Mia Scheulen scored twice to raise her season total to 28 goals while
Lylah Kaminski,
Lucy Hager, and
Caroline Campbell added goals of their own. Hager has scored 16 goals this season. Bockman made six saves in goal. Hager (1), Kaminski (1),
Rebecca Rothrock (1), and
Ansley McGowan (2) all added assists.
The girls head back to Burroughs on Tuesday to take on the top-ranked and undefeated Bombers at 3:30 pm.
