The Westminster Wildcats field hockey team has earned a spot in the Elite Eight of the Missouri State Field Hockey Tournament for the second time in program history after a pair of postseason victories.
Westminster received the No. 9 seed in the tournament and a first-round bye before hosting the No. 24 Edwardsville Tigers in the Round of 32 on October 20. The Wildcats delivered a strong performance, earning a 3-0 shutout victory. Seniors Caroline Campbell and Sydney Simmons each found the back of the net, while sophomore Ellie Yeadon also scored to lead Westminster to the win.
The Wildcats faced a tougher challenge in the Sweet Sixteen on October 24, taking on the No. 8 Rockwood Summit Falcons. Summit had defeated Westminster 4-0 during the regular season on September 21, setting the stage for an opportunity for the Wildcats to turn the tables.
The Falcons struck first in the opening period, but Campbell answered in the second period to even the score at 1-1. Both teams held firm defensively in a scoreless third period, setting up a decisive final frame. Sophomore Gia Cullum delivered the game-winning goal in the fourth period, securing a thrilling victory and sending Westminster to the Elite Eight.
With the win, the Wildcats advance to the quarterfinal round and will face the tournament's No. 1 seed, the Villa Duchesne Saints, on Tuesday, October 27, at 11 a.m. at Sportport International.
Westminster will look to continue its postseason run as the Wildcats make their second Elite Eight appearance in program history.
